Gender and PTSD or The Sierras Weight Loss Solution for Teens and Kids

Gender and PTSD

Author: Paige Ouimett

Current research and clinical observations suggest pronounced gender-based differences in the ways people respond to traumatic events. Most notably, women evidence twice the rate of PTSD as men following traumatic exposure. This important volume brings together leading clinical scientists to analyze the current state of knowledge on gender and PTSD. Cogent findings are presented on gender-based differences and influences in such areas as trauma exposure, risk factors, cognitive and physiological processes, comorbidity, and treatment response. Going beyond simply cataloging gender-related data, the book explores how the research can guide us in developing more effective clinical services for both women and men. Incorporating cognitive, biological, physiological, and sociocultural perspectives, this is an essential sourcebook and text.

Reviewer: Nicholas Greco IV, M.S., BCETS, CATSM, CCRA (Abbott Laboratories)
Description: This book takes a novel approach by exploring the area of gender and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). An in-depth review of gender and PTSD from the aspects of etiology, assessment, diagnostics, psychometrics, and the various treatments currently available is expertly provided by the contributing authors.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a foundation for understanding and an awareness of the gender-based analysis of the PTSD literature and the resulting implications for future treatment and research. Gender plays an integral part in the mental health field, especially in PTSD, so this current focus on gender and PTSD was inevitable. Additionally, increased awareness and the consideration of gender differences can only enhance our understanding of PTSD. The contributing authors have exceeded their objectives and clearly have provided an excellent book for the field.
Audience: Intended mainly for researchers, clinicians, and graduate students in psychology, this book will benefit other mental health professionals who work with patients with PTSD. The contributing authors are knowledgeable, highly credible, and well-versed in the field.
Features: The book is smartly divided into five sections. The first deals with etiology and discusses gender and PTSD through the use of the cognitive model, the neurobiological features, and the developmental, societal, and research contexts. The second section on assessment and diagnosis is not only informative but well written, especially the chapter on psychometric assessment. Section three deals with comorbidity and is an area every clinician should be familiar with. Section four discusses treatment while section five finishes with research and policy issues. The highlight of the book is its overall thoroughness and utility for clinical practice and research.
Assessment: This is quite possibly one of the finest books available on PTSD, especially considering the number of books which are available in this area. It is recommended reading for all clinicians and researchers working with PTSD, and I am pleased to place this book in my personal library.

Booknews

Because the foundational conceptualizations of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) were originally formulated from the study of primarily male war veterans and primarily female sexual assault victims, the study of PTSD is inherently gendered, argue Kimerling (VA Palo Alto Healthcare System), Ouimette (psychology, Washington State U.), and Wolfe (psychiatry, Harvard Medical School and Boston U. School of Medicine). They present 16 essays that look at the epidemiology of PTSD; focus on the issue of gender in the diagnostic category; address men's and women's distinctive comorbid symptoms and degree of comorbid pathology; examine relative efficacy of treatment strategies; and look at future directions in research and policy.
