Party Like a Rockstar: Even When You're Poor as Dirt

Author: Camper English

Yesterday I ate two free meals, took two free shuttles, made a bunch of personal copies on someone else's machine, received a comped CD in the mail and saw the Stereolab show from the VIP section while sucking back complimentary top-shelf drinks.

After being laid off from his job as a computer programmer, freelance writer Camper English had to learn to make do on the salary of, well, a freelance writer. During the next two years, he discovered his social life wasn't impeded at all. "I was going out, drinking up and getting down without spending much of anything." In this book, English lays out the kind of financial advice we all need. I mean, who really cares what color your parachute is or where your cheese is? Just find out how to get designer duds for under 10 bucks, eat for free so you have more money for alcohol, get on the most exclusive guest lists, get into screenings and generally live fabulously for next to nothing!

Camper English has written for Instinct, Unzipped and The San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Library Journal

Freelance writer English's unique financial advice compendium is destined to be read by many twentysomethings. Offered here are self-tested strategies on getting into clubs for free, shopping for new clothes, obtaining discounts on concerts, and dating on the cheap. Although some of his recommendations push the envelope-e.g., bring your own flask into a club to strengthen a weak drink-others are quite practical (wear one shirt eight ways) and humorous (rid your medicine cabinet of hemorrhoid creams before a party). English also includes tips on earning extra income and finding educational discounts along with web search terms for finding free local events. Recommended for any library with a substantial 18- to 30-year-old population. In a similar vein, Favreau maintains that there is a shortcut for every activity. Based on the latest research and the opinions of experts in a variety of fields, his book explains how to streamline common tasks like planning a vacation and negotiating a dispute. For entertainment value, he also throws in shortcuts for climbing Mount Everest, achieving marital bliss, and getting invited to dinner at the White House. The writing is straightforward and practical in its own way. Not essential but fun. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Reviewer: Marguerite Ann Fauber, BSN (Union Hospital)
Description: This book describes the physical and emotional stages a woman goes through in the hours and weeks following her birth experience and focuses on ways the woman can help herself recover through proper body mechanics, exercise, nutrition, and relaxation done at specific times during her postpartum period. The format of the book uses an index along the sides of the pages making it easy for the reader to find specific topics.
Purpose: The purpose is to help guide mothers through different stages of their recovery from a cesarean birth. There is particular emphasis on the physical recovery and exercises. This is needed information, as there are specific issues related to exercise after major abdominal surgery. This book meets the author's objectives very well with both description and illustrations.
Audience: This book is written for the woman who is recovering from a cesarean birth. It is written in a clear, concise, understandable way. There is not much information about the author, other than she is the director of The London Academy of Personal Fitness in London and is a qualified instructor of pre- and post-natal exercise and is the author of another book related to weight loss and exercise.
Features: This book covers proper body mechanics, diet, and exercise in the first few hours, days and weeks following cesarean birth up to 24 weeks postpartum. Emotional issues related to recovery are also addressed. This book covers the aspects of physical recovery in an encouraging, practical, positive, step-by-step way. The book has very good illustrations of mothers and their babies with simple, easy to follow directions. Natural healing remedies are suggested as is a statement about alcohol and caffeine use during breastfeeding without any references cited about the safety of using them. There's little information about the bottle feeding mother. Also, in the last pages of the book repeat cesarean and VBAC issues are addressed and the author gives information without citing any sources or references.
Assessment: This well written book gives general information about cesarean birth and covers the physical recovery thoroughly. The day-week format with many pictures and tables gives the book eye appeal and makes for easy reading. This book covers emotional, nutritional, and physical recovery all in one concise resource. However, it would have more credibility if the author would cite expert references and her own degrees or certifications.

The Obsession or Oncology

The Obsession: Reflections on the Tyranny of Slenderness

Author: Kim Chernin

The Obsession is a deeply committed and beautifully written analysis of our society's increasing demand that women be thin. It offers a careful, thought provoking discussion of the reasons men have encouraged this obsession and women have embraced it. It is a book about women's efforts to become thin rather than to accept the natural dimensions of their bodies--a book about the meaning of food and its rejection.

New York Times Book Review

Eloquently written, passionate in its rhetoric and consistently absorbing.

Oncology: An Evidence-Based Approach

Author: Alfred E Chang

Oncology: An Evidence-Based Approach is a textbook designed to reflect the principles and current practice of oncology with contributors from the fields of medical, surgical, and radiation oncology. The textbook will incorporate an evidence-based approach, enabling the reader to make decisions on the basis of concrete data. Sections on solid tumors, hematologic malignancies and the practice of oncology address the natural history and therapy for the full spectrum of neoplastic diseases in the adult. Further sections present fundamentals of supportive care of the cancer patient, the management of oncologic emergencies and acute toxicities of therapy, as well as care of metastatic disease and the terminally-ill patient. Breaking new ground, the textbook features thoughtful, in-depth sections on cancer prevention and control, cancer surviorship, the economics of cancer care, and cancer informatics. Cancer imaging is covered with an organ system-based approach, with an additional chapter on the especially intriguing potential of PET.  Furthermore, a comprehensive section on translational basic science reviews the fundamentals of molecular biology, the cell cycle and signal transduction, carcinogenesis, cancer genetics, the biology of invations and metastasis, and tumor immunology.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Gary R. MacVicar, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive book of oncology which emphasizes current evidence pertaining to the clinical care of cancer patients.
Purpose: The editorial board of the book state in the preface that the purpose is to discuss relevant oncology topics with an emphasis on an evidence-based approach to assist the busy clinician in making management decisions which are founded on current literature. Given the large number of patients most clinicians see and the rapid development of new treatments in a number of malignancies, staying "current" is becoming increasingly more difficult. Therefore, a book that summarizes key trials and other clinical evidence in a concise yet comprehensive fashion is valuable. The book meets these objectives.
Audience: According to the editors, this book is relevant for all persons involved in the care of cancer patients including residents, fellows, and practicing oncologists, as well as allied health professionals. The book is appropriately written for this audience. Those with particular interests in prevention, supportive care, or survivorship in relation to cancer would also find this book relevant. The editors are leaders in various disciplines in oncology, and many chapter authors are recognized experts from leading institutions.
Features: A wide variety of topics is covered, including chapters on a comprehensive array of solid and hematologic malignancies. In addition, new, unique, and evolving topics are discussed with chapters on translational sciences, informatics, ethical issues, targetedtherapies, and PET imaging. Supportive oncology and survivorship topics are also included. Many of these chapters contain practical information which is relevant to clinicians. An evidence-based approach is emphasized throughout the book and an effort is made to present current evidence. Most chapters contain a number of useful tables and figures summarizing trial data and presenting clinically relevant information. Multimodality approaches are stressed as well.
Assessment: This is a useful addition to the existing standard oncology textbooks. With its emphasis on current evidence and its comprehensive nature, this is an excellent resource for clinicians seeking answers to clinical questions, updated information regarding current care of cancer patients, and insight into translational sciences, supportive care, and survivorship issues.
