Candida albicans is a yeast that exists inside all of us. Normally it presents no problems, but today's widespread use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, contraceptive pills, and steroids, as well as a sugar-rich diet, can cause a proliferation of this parasitic yeast. This can often be the root cause of a wide variety of problems such as depression, anxiety, irritability, bloatedness, heartburn, tiredness, allergies, acne, migraine, cystitis, and menstrual problems. Leon Chaitow, using the latest research and his own clinical experience, shows how to determine if yeast is your problem and provides a comprehensive, non-drug program for its control.

Author: Judith Matz

This accessible volume will guide therapists of all disciplines through step-by-step treatment of compulsive eating. The authors introduce the new research related to health, weight, fitness and diet failure, and then discuss a treatment method which advocates eating as guided by physiological signal: eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full. The book offers tools for therapists to recognize compulsive eating patterns, use their training to address underlying psychological difficulties, and implement therapeutic principles for healing.

Aromatherapy - Scent and Psyche: Using Essential Oils for Physical and Emotional Well-Being

Author: Peter Damian

Aromatic oils have been used for thousands of years not only for their fragrance but for culinary, therapeutic, ritual, and spiritual purposes. More than a fashionable trend, aromatherapy is coming into its own as a body of knowledge and practice with specific applications that have a solid scientific base. Drawing on research and clinical studies, Peter and Kate Damian look at many applications from treating viral infections with garlic or black pepper oil to using rose oil to relax patients undergoing chemotherapy; from aromatic massage to the "environmental fragrancing" of subways and supermarkets.

Explores:

• How scent interacts with emotion, memory, mental acuity, and sleep

• Why specific scents are so effective in therapeutic and ritual settings

• Antiseptic and antimicrobial properties of essential oils
How men and women differ in their responses to odors

• Provides a thorough exposition of the ancient practice of aromatics in China, India, Persia, and Egypt

• Details our modern scientific understanding of the physiology and psychology of scent.

• Includes annotated profiles for forty-four essential oils and specific instructions for creating essential oil blends.

Author: MD Mark Hyman

Two physicians unveil a revolutionary, accessible, science-based,patient-centered program for living an active, age-defying, disease-free life.

Healthcare is pulled and shaped by many forces, by drug and insurance companies looking for profits, by politicians in search of votes, and by stressed, overworked physicians who barely have time to talk to you before writing a prescription or packing you off to a specialist.

Through the practice of the six-week Ultraprevention program, you'll learn three simple steps that stop these forces and create a lifetime of good health. So stop falling for the myths that make you sick and start Ultraprevention, the powerful plan to get older without aging, to maintain health for all of life.

Appetite for Profit: How the Food Industry Undermines Our Health and How to Fight Back

Author: Michele Simon

Over the past two years, concerned Americans have finally begun to ask: Who is to blame for the growing public health crisis of obesity and diet-related illnesses? Is the junk food industry at fault, or is it all just a matter of personal and parental responsibility? How can we fight back with workable solutions?

While much of the attention remains focused at the national policy level, the real story is taking place in states and communities all over the country, where people are attempting to "take back" their food supply from greedy corporations. Too often media accounts of this heated debate portray the food industry as being "part of the solution," missing the behind-the-scenes struggles.

Appetite for Profit describes food industry lobbying, front groups, and other tactics that operate to undermine nutrition policy in schools and elsewhere. It explains how to counter attack. Additionally, this book tells how to see through corporate promises; illustrates the importance of rhetoric to control the debate; informs how to respond; celebrates the unsung heroes in the fight; and provides reliable resources on how to get involved. This enlightening book provides hope with real-life examples of winning strategies and a road map for reform.

Publishers Weekly

Simon, a health policy expert and law professor, skewers the food industry for undermining the health of Americans with "nutrient deficient factory made pseudofoods." In lawyerly fashion, she explains the ABCs of the business imperative of "Big Food" (Coca-Cola, Kraft Foods and McDonald's, among many others): make short-term profit without regard to the product's nutritional value or societal effects. Permissible tactics, she says, include false advertising, sham "healthy" food initiatives and co-opting the government, press and academia. Simon also argues that food-industry advocates use front groups to attack critics and spread misinformation about nutritional needs. Simon also chastises her fellow food activists for applauding all "steps in the right direction," no matter how inadequate; the press for its passive publication of scientifically dubious industry statements; and the government for abandoning effective regulation of the food industry. Her case made, Simon offers a host of suggestions and a manual-like set of directions to parents and other food activists on how to work with legislatures, school boards and the media to create a "just food system" that is "sustainable, affordable, accessible, and convenient." (Nov.) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

While food is ubiquitously available in our country, nutritious food is difficult to find, and it is becoming increasingly hard to discern the nutritious from the junky. This is exactly what Big Food wants, according to public health attorney Simon (Hastings Coll. of the Law, Univ. of California; founder, Ctr. for Informed Food Choices). This expos of Big Food's unethical behavior and devious marketing strategies is a convincing call to action. Simon, a vegan, does not offer readers advice on changing their diet. Instead, she proffers tips on how to see through corporate rhetoric that does not match with reality and how to protect children from junk-food marketing. Concerned parents will no doubt find this an especially valuable tool. Appendixes provide a glossary to understanding corporate-speak, a guide to industry front-groups, a breakdown of the myths debunked throughout the book, and resources for those who want to effect change. An essential purchase for public health collections, this book is recommended for public and academic libraries as a follow-up to Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation and Marion Nestle's Food Politics: How the Food Industry Influences Nutrition and Health. Ancient Wisdom of the Chinese Tonic Herbs

Author: Ron Teeguarden

Sure to appeal to the millions who embraced the tenets of Asian medicine in Deepak Chopra's "Ageless Body, Timeless Mind", this book offers road map to total health through the use Chinese tonic herbs.

Library Journal

Teeguarden is a master herbalist and researcher of Chinese tonic herbs--"tonic" meaning herbs prescribed to promote "radiant" health as opposed to attacking disease. His publisher's legal department hedges its bets by stating in the review galley that "absolutely no medicinal claims are being made or implied in this book." Nevertheless, Teeguarden's text is replete with claims concerning sexual potency, the immune system, and anti-aging treatments, among others, that are entirely undocumented except by statements such as "Many studies now indicate...." To his credit (or the legal department's), Teeguarden provides information about contraindications and toxicity. Unfortunately, these caveats are equally undocumented. Radiant Health might be useful on a staff-only reference shelf, but only as a glossary to herbal terms. Not recommended.--Catherine Arnott Smith, Predoctoral Research Fellow, Ctr. for Biomedical Informatics, Univ. of Pittsburgh

Getting Old without Getting Anxious or She Who Dreams

Getting Old without Getting Anxious

Author: Peter V Rabins

The first book to help the millions of older Americans who suffer from anxiety disorders to find relief and healing.

Informative and full of hope, Getting Old Without Getting Anxious assists older people and their caregivers in overcoming one of the more crippling and misunderstood human afflictions: anxiety. Geriatric psychiatrist and bestselling author of The 36-Hour Day Dr. Peter V. Rabins explains how the many changes that occur as a person ages can trigger severe and life-altering anxiety, often destroying lives. This valuable guide will help readers to:

- learn how late-life anxiety differs from anxiety in younger people; - identify the disorder a loved one may have and its causes; and - treat the affliction with the best remedy or combination of options available.

Anxiety is often dismissed as simply a by-product of old age. Stories from patients will encourage and motivate both those suffering from mental illness and their caregivers.

Aspirin or The GI Made Simple

Aspirin: The Remarkable Story of a Wonder Drug

Author: Diarmuid Jeffreys

Diarmuid Jeffreys traces the story of aspirin from the drug’s origins in ancient Egypt, through its industrial development at the end of the nineteenth century and its key role in the great flu pandemic of 1918, to its subsequent exploitation by the pharmaceutical conglomerates and the marvelous powers still being discovered today.

Library Journal

Aspirin is a drug of apparently endless secrets. Research has continually uncovered new health benefits, from the first mention in ancient Egyptian scrolls of willow's medicinal uses to the more than 750 studies in the first half of 2004. It is now accepted as a tool in fighting heart disease and is showing potential for preventing or treating cancers, dementia, and a wide range of other conditions. Jeffreys (The Bureau: Inside the Modern FBI) traces aspirin's history by looking at the scientists, businessmen, and hucksters whose lives were entwined with the drug's rise, fall, and rise again, as well as the corporations and governments, most prominently Bayer and Nazi Germany, drawn into the story. The book covers much of the same ground as Charles C. Mann and Mark L. Plummer's The Aspirin Wars: Money, Medicine, and 100 Years of Rampant Competition but brings the story up to date. Recommended for medical, public, and academic libraries. Richard Maxwell, Penrose-St. Francis Health Svcs. Lib., Colorado Springs Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Kirkus Reviews

The extraordinary history of the little white pill found in just about everyone's medicine cabinet. Justifiably labeling aspirin a wonder drug, British journalist Jeffreys (The Bureau: Inside the Modern FBI, 1995) reminds us that its history dates back to around 3000 b.c., when the ancient Egyptians recorded the medicine value of willow, a source of salicylates. Germany's Bayer Company developed acetylsalicylic acid and gave it the brand name Aspirin in the 19th century, but Bayer's assets were seized by the US during WWI. Jeffreys sorts out the complicated story of the company's subsequent struggle to regain its markets and protect its patents and trademark around the world. Taking a "for the want of a nail" approach, the author attributes to aspirin a significant role in the rise of Nazi Germany, asserting that if the drug had not made Bayer such a strong company, it would not have been able to consolidate German chemical firms into the giant cartel IG Farben, major financial backer of the Nazi party. Competition from other makers of aspirin and from Anacin and Bufferin (painkillers containing aspirin) first challenged Bayer's supremacy; the later introductions of acetaminophen and ibuprofen further divided the analgesic market. Aspirin seemed to have reached the end of its glory days, but the pill got a surprising new lease on life in the 1980s, when research revealed its ability to inhibit platelets in the blood from clotting, which reduced the risk of heart attacks and strokes. Jeffreys also looks at studies suggesting that aspirin may be effective in preventing many forms of cancer, reducing the risk of Alzheimer's and ameliorating less serious conditions such as migraines andperiodontal disease. Some 26,000 scientific papers have already been published, and 2,000 aspirin research projects are in the works: who knows what new uses may next be uncovered?A well-told and intriguing story with surprising twists and turns. Reviewer:Dani Moffit, MA, MPE, ATC(Temple University College of Health Professioins)
Description:Last updated in 2004, this is a concise, user friendly book written specifically for students in health, physical education, exercise science, and recreation (HPER). Structured more notably for a semester-based course, it provides basic introductory information needed for a student to move forward in the research realm of academia.
Purpose:The purpose is to enhance readers' abilities to conduct research and allow practitioners to be able to use research in their professional work. This book is necessary in HPER as it provides key references specific for an area that is often underrepresented in published work. As a reference and guide, this book meets the author's objectives.
Audience:This book is written for both students and professionals in the disciplines of HPER. The authors have taken the general discipline of research and provided specific examples and instances of its use in the areas of interest within HPER. The authors are experts in this area, which helps them to better describe a rather dry subject.
Features:Each chapter includes key concepts and objectives to introduce the content, as well as learning activities that reinforce what is covered. The section on statistics emphasizes interpretation, rather than actual mathematical skills. Computers can make the computations, but for researchers, the understanding of the results is what is necessary. This section also includes problems with solutions for independent practice. A nice inclusion is the chapter on ethics in human subject research, a topic with whichstudents are often not familiar. This helps understanding of the process required to begin an initial study, and the importance of this quality control. Another valuable feature for new researchers is the "Checklist for Evaluating Research," which encourages careful review of research and helps one discern what determines good and poor research.
Assessment:This is an excellent book to have as a reference. It does not belabor any one area, but focuses on the important aspects of each topic and is to the point in each subject. For those who are being introduced to research for the first time, it provides an overview that is specific and thorough, including examples pertinent to HPER. For those who struggle with statistics, this is a basic primer on the need for concepts which will help build a research design. It is comparable to existing introductory research texts in this area.
