The Big Fix or Cambridge Handbook of Psychology Health and Medicine

The Big Fix

Author: Katherine Greider

As the pharmaceutical industry invests more and more in the development of new drugs, true breakthroughs are few and far between. Into the breach comes a panoply of product-line extensions and me-too drugs aimed at grabbing market share. The industry plows its high profits back into research, but invests an equal or greater sum in flogging its products in every imaginable venue. Research studies are designed to support marketing claims. Many doctors all over the country get their first information about new drugs from a salesperson. And, increasingly, prescription drugs are pitched to consumers on TV and the internet with images of hope, terror, or chic. Evidence-based practice guidelines, which endeavor to get the right medicines to those who will benefit most, can't be heard over the din.

Having created an unprecedented number of "megabrands"—blockbuster drugs with huge sales—and undergone an extraordinary wave of consolidation, some drug companies now find themselves in a precarious position. Patents are expiring on flagship products. In order to sustain the growth Wall Street has come to expect, these companies must produce billions of dollars worth of new revenue—fast. But can Americans continue to bankroll Operation Grow Big Pharma? Must we swallow the bad with the good?

Cambridge Handbook of Psychology, Health and Medicine

Author: Andrew Baum

Health psychology is a rapidly expanding discipline combining psychology and clinical medicine. This important text collates international and interdisciplinary expertise to form a unique encyclopedic handbook to this field that will be valuable to medical practitioners as well as psychologists. To facilitate easy reference, the handbook's chapters are alphabetically organized with extensive crossreferencing. The first of three sections introduces the nonspecialist reader to broad areas of psychology relevant to the practice of medicine. The second and third sections examine behavioral factors in relation to practice by citing specific medical conditions. This book will prove to be an invaluable resource to all those with an interest in the psychological aspects of health care.

Wolfgang Lutz

The book gives an overview of important areas of psychology relevant to medicine. It covers the theoretical foundations and empirical findings of psychological effects of illness, psychological influences on health and illness, assessment, intervention, and treatments as well as preventive measures relevant to particular medical conditions. The book is intended to be a comprehensive handbook and is expected to be a reference text. Readers can seek out particular chapters for specific purposes. Therefore the book meets the needs of medical practitioners dealing with health psychology. It is specifically useful for those who want a short introduction and overview of a specific topic in health psychology. The references allow for a further exploration of the field. The book is written for medical practitioners and health professionals as well as undergraduates in psychology, medicine, or other health related courses. The chapters are written by credible authorities in the specific fields. The quality and pertinence of the whole book as well as the illustrations and tables are clear and informative. Billy Yamaguchi Feng Shui Beauty or I Can Survive

Billy Yamaguchi Feng Shui Beauty: Bringing the Ancient Principles of Balance and Harmony to Hair, Makeup and Personal Style

Author: Billy Yamaguchi

What are your Feng Shui elements?

Feng Shui is an ancient and proven system for balance and harmony. Billy Yamaguchi gives you everything you need to find out which Feng Shui elements are the strongest for you right now and how to choose the hairstyle, makeup and clothing that will bring out your true inner self.

--Figure out your elements from your lifestyle and personality
--Find out whether you need to balance, harmonize or enhance your elements
--Learn which hair lengths, cuts and highlights are the best for your elements and face shape
--Discover the best makeup and hair color for your elements and skin tone

You’ll end up with hair and makeup that reflect who you really are-your outer appearance will finally express your true self.

Most hairstylists are trained in a particular cut and give this same haircut to all of their clients, regardless of differences in lifestyle and personality. Now Billy Yamaguchi, internationally known hairstylist to the stars, helps you bring the principles of Feng Shui to your hairstyle, makeup and fashion, so your look will express your true self.

Using the five elements of Feng Shui-Fire, Earth, Metal, Water and Wood-Billy shows you who you really are in the world, and then designs your haircut, color, makeup and fashion choices to really express your unique style.

For example, the Fire element tends to be passionate and adventurous, while the Metal element is more precise and goal oriented. While everyone has all five elements in their nature, two elements are predominant at any given time. Once you know what they are, your hairstyle, makeup and clothing can be used to enhance, balance orharmonize your elements. You’ve never felt so natural, comfortable and self-expressed in your own skin before.

For the first time, you will have a simple way to communicate your personality to your hairstylist and to figure out what makeup colors and fashion styles suit you best.

You’ve never felt so natural, comfortable and self-expressed in your own skin before!

Publishers Weekly

Yamaguchi owns five California hair salons and is a feng shui devotee. Yet he runs into difficulty with this attempt to explain how understanding feng shui can help a woman alter her physical appearance for the better. Traditionally, the ancient Asian philosophy assists people with placing objects in the home in such a way that energy (chi) flows and creates a positive environment. Applying that discipline more widely, Yamaguchi says we should consider our bodies as homes. By placing our hair and makeup in a certain way, chi will flow through our souls. Feng shui, Yamaguchi explains, is based on the belief that each individual's personality is dominated by two of five elements: fire, earth, metal, water and wood. After readers take a rather involved 17-question quiz, they'll find their most dominant personality elements. They must then muddle through two chapters of jargon and complicated charts to determine the strength of each element in their personality, and then flip to the paragraphs throughout the book relating to their score to determine which hair style, hair color and makeup will bring forth their best physical traits. There are far easier ways for a woman to get advice for looking her best; indeed, the book's latter chapters, where Yamaguchi straightforwardly explains makeup and hair techniques, are its most useful sections. Library Journal

In his several California salons, professional hairstylist Yamaguchi has successfully applied the Chinese art of feng shui to beauty. Here, he seeks to help readers begin the practice at home through a series of exercises that will ostensibly identify their dominant elements (from fire, earth, metal, water, and wood); the proper makeup and haircut to keep those elements in balance is then prescribed. Drowning in your own wateriness? Add wood via an easy, swinging coiffure. Certainly, Yamaguchi's premise sounds empowering-beauty is deeper than skin-but one can't help but conclude that feng shui is too complex an art to be applied to as practical a skill as looking good. Readers could get the same results from any stylist with proper traditional training-and bypass this book's confusing background and organization. Libraries are better off with more straightforward, all-inclusive beauty books, e.g., Jennifer Trung's recent InStyle Getting Gorgeous.-Heather McCormack, Library Journal Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Party Like a Rockstar: Even When You're Poor as Dirt

Author: Camper English

Yesterday I ate two free meals, took two free shuttles, made a bunch of personal copies on someone else's machine, received a comped CD in the mail and saw the Stereolab show from the VIP section while sucking back complimentary top-shelf drinks.

After being laid off from his job as a computer programmer, freelance writer Camper English had to learn to make do on the salary of, well, a freelance writer. During the next two years, he discovered his social life wasn't impeded at all. "I was going out, drinking up and getting down without spending much of anything." In this book, English lays out the kind of financial advice we all need. I mean, who really cares what color your parachute is or where your cheese is? Just find out how to get designer duds for under 10 bucks, eat for free so you have more money for alcohol, get on the most exclusive guest lists, get into screenings and generally live fabulously for next to nothing!

Camper English has written for Instinct, Unzipped and The San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Library Journal

Freelance writer English's unique financial advice compendium is destined to be read by many twentysomethings. Offered here are self-tested strategies on getting into clubs for free, shopping for new clothes, obtaining discounts on concerts, and dating on the cheap. Although some of his recommendations push the envelope-e.g., bring your own flask into a club to strengthen a weak drink-others are quite practical (wear one shirt eight ways) and humorous (rid your medicine cabinet of hemorrhoid creams before a party). English also includes tips on earning extra income and finding educational discounts along with web search terms for finding free local events. Recommended for any library with a substantial 18- to 30-year-old population. In a similar vein, Favreau maintains that there is a shortcut for every activity. Based on the latest research and the opinions of experts in a variety of fields, his book explains how to streamline common tasks like planning a vacation and negotiating a dispute. For entertainment value, he also throws in shortcuts for climbing Mount Everest, achieving marital bliss, and getting invited to dinner at the White House. The writing is straightforward and practical in its own way. Not essential but fun. Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Marguerite Ann Fauber, BSN (Union Hospital)
Description: This book describes the physical and emotional stages a woman goes through in the hours and weeks following her birth experience and focuses on ways the woman can help herself recover through proper body mechanics, exercise, nutrition, and relaxation done at specific times during her postpartum period. The format of the book uses an index along the sides of the pages making it easy for the reader to find specific topics.
Purpose: The purpose is to help guide mothers through different stages of their recovery from a cesarean birth. There is particular emphasis on the physical recovery and exercises. This is needed information, as there are specific issues related to exercise after major abdominal surgery. This book meets the author's objectives very well with both description and illustrations.
Audience: This book is written for the woman who is recovering from a cesarean birth. It is written in a clear, concise, understandable way. There is not much information about the author, other than she is the director of The London Academy of Personal Fitness in London and is a qualified instructor of pre- and post-natal exercise and is the author of another book related to weight loss and exercise.
Features: This book covers proper body mechanics, diet, and exercise in the first few hours, days and weeks following cesarean birth up to 24 weeks postpartum. Emotional issues related to recovery are also addressed. This book covers the aspects of physical recovery in an encouraging, practical, positive, step-by-step way. The book has very good illustrations of mothers and their babies with simple, easy to follow directions. Natural healing remedies are suggested as is a statement about alcohol and caffeine use during breastfeeding without any references cited about the safety of using them. There's little information about the bottle feeding mother. Also, in the last pages of the book repeat cesarean and VBAC issues are addressed and the author gives information without citing any sources or references.
Assessment: This well written book gives general information about cesarean birth and covers the physical recovery thoroughly. The day-week format with many pictures and tables gives the book eye appeal and makes for easy reading. This book covers emotional, nutritional, and physical recovery all in one concise resource. However, it would have more credibility if the author would cite expert references and her own degrees or certifications.

The Obsession or Oncology

The Obsession: Reflections on the Tyranny of Slenderness

Author: Kim Chernin

The Obsession is a deeply committed and beautifully written analysis of our society's increasing demand that women be thin. It offers a careful, thought provoking discussion of the reasons men have encouraged this obsession and women have embraced it. It is a book about women's efforts to become thin rather than to accept the natural dimensions of their bodies--a book about the meaning of food and its rejection.

Oncology: An Evidence-Based Approach

Author: Alfred E Chang

Oncology: An Evidence-Based Approach is a textbook designed to reflect the principles and current practice of oncology with contributors from the fields of medical, surgical, and radiation oncology. The textbook will incorporate an evidence-based approach, enabling the reader to make decisions on the basis of concrete data. Sections on solid tumors, hematologic malignancies and the practice of oncology address the natural history and therapy for the full spectrum of neoplastic diseases in the adult. Further sections present fundamentals of supportive care of the cancer patient, the management of oncologic emergencies and acute toxicities of therapy, as well as care of metastatic disease and the terminally-ill patient. Breaking new ground, the textbook features thoughtful, in-depth sections on cancer prevention and control, cancer surviorship, the economics of cancer care, and cancer informatics. Cancer imaging is covered with an organ system-based approach, with an additional chapter on the especially intriguing potential of PET.  Furthermore, a comprehensive section on translational basic science reviews the fundamentals of molecular biology, the cell cycle and signal transduction, carcinogenesis, cancer genetics, the biology of invations and metastasis, and tumor immunology.

Reviewer: Gary R. MacVicar, MD(Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine)
Description: This is a comprehensive book of oncology which emphasizes current evidence pertaining to the clinical care of cancer patients.
Purpose: The editorial board of the book state in the preface that the purpose is to discuss relevant oncology topics with an emphasis on an evidence-based approach to assist the busy clinician in making management decisions which are founded on current literature. Given the large number of patients most clinicians see and the rapid development of new treatments in a number of malignancies, staying "current" is becoming increasingly more difficult. Therefore, a book that summarizes key trials and other clinical evidence in a concise yet comprehensive fashion is valuable. The book meets these objectives.
Audience: According to the editors, this book is relevant for all persons involved in the care of cancer patients including residents, fellows, and practicing oncologists, as well as allied health professionals. The book is appropriately written for this audience. Those with particular interests in prevention, supportive care, or survivorship in relation to cancer would also find this book relevant. The editors are leaders in various disciplines in oncology, and many chapter authors are recognized experts from leading institutions.
Features: A wide variety of topics is covered, including chapters on a comprehensive array of solid and hematologic malignancies. In addition, new, unique, and evolving topics are discussed with chapters on translational sciences, informatics, ethical issues, targetedtherapies, and PET imaging. Supportive oncology and survivorship topics are also included. Many of these chapters contain practical information which is relevant to clinicians. An evidence-based approach is emphasized throughout the book and an effort is made to present current evidence. Most chapters contain a number of useful tables and figures summarizing trial data and presenting clinically relevant information. Multimodality approaches are stressed as well.
Assessment: This is a useful addition to the existing standard oncology textbooks. With its emphasis on current evidence and its comprehensive nature, this is an excellent resource for clinicians seeking answers to clinical questions, updated information regarding current care of cancer patients, and insight into translational sciences, supportive care, and survivorship issues.

Heart Disease: Everything You Need to Know (Your Personal Health Series)

Author: Robert Myers

Includes the latest medical findings.

Widespread and deadly, heart disease is a grim epidemic. Affecting parents, siblings, friends and co-workers, heart disease is so common that it is impossible to remain untouched by it. Heart disease is responsible for more than 37% of all deaths and is the leading cause of death in people over 65.

In Heart Disease, Dr. Rob Myers shows how to take control of the condition. For example, of the 50 million Americans who suffer from high blood pressure -- the leading contributor to heart disease -- only 35% know they have it. Yet, high blood pressure is easily detectable and usually controllable.

Heart Disease is a practical health guide that simplifies this disease's biology and physiology and clearly explains the medial concepts and jargon often used by doctors in diagnosis and treatment.

Using detailed tables, sidebars and diagrams, Heart Disease provides comprehensive, accurate, safe and up-to-date information for patients and their families.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Robert L. Menuet II, M.D. (Ochsner Clinic Foundation)
Description: This book, written by a board certified cardiologist, is a practical guide for patients and families affected by heart disease or facing risk factors contributing to its progression. The book is comprehensive yet concise in its description and explanation of this complex disease process. From the author's use of simple but accurate terminology, the reader is able to explore concepts from normal physiology to risk factors and evolution of heart disease. The book also covers the latest in medical treatment, risk factor identification, and drug therapy with the helpful addition of tables, illustrations, indexes, and glossaries.
Purpose: The author's intent is to bring to light the often unrecognized epidemic of the number one cause of death of American adults today that by its very nature will touch everyone's lives directly or indirectly. The author takes a very unambiguous approach in order to demystify and also dispel common misconceptions of heart disease.
Audience: Through use of nonmedical jargon, he imparts a sound fund of knowledge to help steer patients and families to healthier lives. The book is a wonderful resource and sorely needed in such a rapidly evolving area of medicine.
Features: The book is surprisingly comprehensive with thorough discussions of coronary artery disease, arrhythmias and management, newly discovered risk factors such as Lp (a), CRP, and coronary calcium scores. Many cutting-edge diagnostic tests such as cardiac MRI and CT angiography are explained, and their roles in heart disease evaluation are discussed. The book also examines invasive treatment modalities from evolving technologies in angioplasty, including drug eluting stents, to bypass and other surgical options.
Assessment: Finally, an inexpensive intelligently written resource that tackles this confusing topic is available to patients and their families. This nicely edited book is written in a fluid and seamless style, affording an effortless readability. This would be a superb resource for patients and families to help them confidently understand heart disease and play an active role in their own healthcare, becoming their own best doctors.

What People Are Saying

The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women

Author: Lauren Slater

An indispensable home reference for women, from the college years to old age. The Complete Guide to Mental Health For Women is designed to help women take control of their mental health, whether their concern is a specific disorder or simply the psychological stresses of a life in transition. Within an accessible format that includes tables, charts, and comprehensive lists, over fifty experts provide the most up-to-date information on the entire range of women's mental health issues, including:
Addiction
Anxiety
Bipolar Disorder
Depression
Eating Disorders
LIfespan Psychology
Life Issues From Sexuality tTo Relationships to Traumatic Experience and Illness
Postpartum Depression
Psychopharmacology
Psychotherapeutic Treatments, From EMDR and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy To Traditional
Insight Therapy
Mental Health Effects of Racism and Poverty
Questions to Ask a Psychologist or Psychiatrist
Trauma
Drawing on the latest thinking in psychiatry and psychology, and written for women of diverse backgrounds, this trade reference guide to women's mental health provides a comprehensive and readable overview to the psychological issues that concern women most. Arguing that women want and need to understand their mental health as more than a question of disorder or normality, it begins with the life cycle, helping women understand the major issues and biological changes associated with young adulthood, middle age, and old age. The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women also specifically addresses the psychological importance of women's sexuality and relationships, and discusses how social contexts, such as poverty and racism, affect mentalhealth.

Part Two explores specific mental disorders, including those, like postpartum depression, related to times when women are particularly vulnerable to mental illness. Part Three takes a closer look at treatments, including the use of antidepressants and other drugs, and various types of psychotherapy, from cognitive behavioral treatments to EMDR and beyond. The Complete Guide to Mental Health for Women ends with a section on life enhancements that discusses some of the activities that can help us live fuller lives.

Library Journal

Written for lay readers, this four-part guide addresses mental health issues that pertain to women, from aging and depression to pregnancy and trauma. In Part 1, editor Slater (Prozac Diary) and professors Jessica Henderson Daniel and Amy Banks (both Harvard Medical Sch.) offer a helpful overview on "Psychology and the Life Cycle," which explains the main issues and biological changes of young adulthood, middle age, and old age. In Part 2, more than 50 psychiatrists and psychologists contribute adequate mainstream introductions to the aforementioned topics with good See Also references. Then in Part 3, readers learn about the full range of psychotherapeutic therapies (e.g., EDMR, antidepressants, and psychotherapy), before a closing discussion on "life enhancers" such as exercise. The bibliography is sparse and somewhat eccentric. As the only recent reference that covers both the female life cycle and specific mental disorders, this book is recommended as a starting point for patrons and especially for small libraries that can't afford to purchase the many books that deal in greater depth with the specific issues covered here.-Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, WA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

How the Rich Get Thin or 100 Weight Loss Tips that Really Work

How the Rich Get Thin: Park Avenue's Top Diet Doctor Reveals the Secrets to Losing Weight and Feeling Great

Author: Jana Klauer

Built around a two week program that emphasizes the importance of calcium to weight loss, How The Rich Get Thin can give its followers the elegant, lean body we all envy on the Upper East Side..

Publishers Weekly

Klauer's diet plan isn't revolutionary, but her approach is noteworthy. The author, a research fellow at St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital with a practice on Park Avenue, has a clientele comprising primarily successful businessmen and -women, "ladies who lunch" and celebrities-people with the drive to do whatever it takes to succeed, in the boardroom, in social circles or on the gym floor. They understand and practice Klauer's "nonnegotiables": daily exercise, the consumption of protein and calcium, the management of food cravings and the elimination of processed food. Although some readers won't be able to follow all of Klauer's advice-a personal trainer isn't within everyone's budget, nor can everyone choose the healthy Manhattan chain Better Burger over McDonald's-but there are many useful suggestions here. Try grilled shrimp over lentils with a cup of steamed broccoli for dinner, with a side of mineral water, and when traveling, beware the hotel minibar (the Park Avenue mindset creeps in with such lines as "better groups, such as... the Ritz Carlton and Four Seasons, allow special meal requests that can be preordered"). Sticking to Klauer's strict regimen isn't easy, but neither is life on Park Avenue. Agent, Richard Curtis. (Jan.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Womans Unconscious Use of Her Body or Temporal Dimensions of Landscape Ecology

Woman's Unconscious Use of Her Body

Author: Dinora Pines

The mind-body connection in women is complex and intriguing: women can develop rashes, abdominal pains, or asthma at moments of stress; they may become pregnant or miscarry in response to unconscious conflicts; and they are deeply influenced by bodily changes - from menstruation to menopause - throughout their lives. In this perceptive and engrossing book, an eminent psychoanalyst explores key moments of women's lives and sexuality, examining how their unconscious minds are expressed through their bodies and, conversely, how their body experiences impinge upon their minds. Drawing on numerous examples from her clinical practice, Dinora Pines tells vivid stories of how young, pregnant women learn to integrate reality with unconscious fantasies, hopes, and daydreams; how women cope with the psychological antecedents and consequences of miscarriage, abortion, and infertility; and how older women adjust to the end of fertility and to old age, with the attendant issues of loss. Pines concludes by discussing her work with Holocaust survivors and children of survivors who unconsciously somatize their emotional distress about the horrors of the war and postwar years. Throughout she enables us to see how the analytic encounter can reveal and relate the secrets of the mind and body and provide a space for thought and change.

Temporal Dimensions of Landscape Ecology: Wildlife Responses to Variable Resources

Author: John A Bissonett

Over the past twenty-five years, the effects of the spatial distribution and scaling of resources on animal populations have been increasingly studied in wildlife biology, landscape ecology, conservation biology, and related fields. However, spatial patterns change over time. In Temporal Dimensions of Landscape Ecology: Wildlife Responses to Variable Resources, the authors discuss the effects that temporal changes in resources have on animal populations. Resource availability and quality are not distributed homogeneously over time, depending for example on predictable changes in seasons, mating and birthing cycles, unpredictable resource pulses and weather-related phenomena, ecological disturbances, and historical legacies.

Temporal Dimensions of Landscape Ecology brings together chapters that address the idea of current as well as historical temporal influences on resource availability, quality, and distribution. The authors draw attention to the neglected temporal issues so important to understanding species and community responses. This book will be of interest to both wildlife and conservation students and practitioners working with temporal and spatial scale issues.

Author: Joseph Levy

A road map for understanding and managing children's stomach problems -- from symptoms to treatment, and everything in between

The Acne Prescription or Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution

The Acne Prescription: The Perricone Program for Clear and Healthy Skin at Every Age

Author: Nicholas Perricon

From the author of the runaway #1 bestseller
The Perricone Prescription

Long recognized as a pioneer in reversing skin damage caused by aging, Nicholas Perricone, M.D. now turns his knowledge and expertise toward acne. Here, Dr. Perricone finally delivers the solutions acne sufferers have been waiting for. A complete program that incorporates his trademark three-tiered approach -- anti-inflammatory diet, targeted acne-fighting nutritional supplements, and breakthrough anti-inflammatory topical applications -- The Acne Prescription will help clear your skin in a matter of days and will tell you what to do to treat the pitting and scarring that often affects adult acne sufferers.

Perricone's breakthrough research dispels common myths regarding the causes and treatment of acne. By following the Perricone Program, you can dramatically reduce the appearance of blemishes and breakouts, and achieve a smoother look within three days.

Read by Robb Webb

Publishers Weekly

Perricone, adjunct professor of dermatology at Michigan State University and author of both The Wrinkle Cure and The Perricone Prescription, bases his work on a simple premise: aging skin, and other dermatological conditions are the result of inflammation at the cellular level. To offset this inflammation, Perricone recommends a specific diet. Readers who follow Perricone's prescription diet are advised to avoid starchy foods and any foods that are high in carbohydrates (including many fruits and cereals). The focus is on fish, omega 3 fatty acids, protein and antioxidants, which will effectively reduce the level of cellular inflammation and produce more radiant skin. This new book reiterates this information, but uses the research and findings to assist readers of all ages, specifically adolescents and young adults with acne. A 28-day diet program, glossary of yoga exercises, and discussion of nutritional supplements is included to guide the reader toward better skin. For the most part, readers will find little here that isn't printed in one of Perricone's earlier books. But for new readers, this book may be of interest. Though his theories may still be considered contentious in dermatological circles, one can hardly argue against a regimen that dictates a healthy diet, regular exercise, and good hygiene. (Sept.) Bobbi Brown Beauty Evolution: A Guide to a Lifetime of Beauty

Author: Bobbi Brown

A celebration of beauty across the generations.

This positive-outlook guide for women reflects, as Bobbi says, "What happens to us as we make our way through life, and how we can continue making ourselves better." Bobbi shares her candid views of her own beauty odyssey, as well as her formidable makeup expertise, to help women feel good about themselves at every age. In the engaging, down-to-earth style that's pure Bobbi, she addresses the need-to-know issues we all face at one time or another -- from how to deal with changes in skin to what adjustments in makeup application are really necessary (and appropriate) as we get older. Also included are the personal, heartfelt thoughts of women from all walks of life -- all ages, shapes, sizes, and ethnicities -- reflecting on what beauty means to them. Their words serve to underscore Bobbi's message that true beauty "comes from having confidence and feeling good about who you are."

Publishers Weekly

Brown, celebrity make-up artist and founder of a highly successful cosmetics line, here follows her bestselling Bobbi Brown Beauty and Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty with a winning guide to looking good throughout a lifetime. With the warmth and encouragement of a fellow comrade, Brown encourages 20-somethings to keep their makeup minimal, 30-somethings to take better care of their skin and 70-somethings to relax and enjoy all they've achieved (easy for Brown to say; she's 45). Peppering her book with diet and exercise tips, Brown includes how-tos on getting rid of body hair, spider veins and those annoying bumps ("not exactly a rash and not pimples") that can line certain female arms. With chapters on pregnancy, plastic surgery and even coping with cancer, this friendly resource is one to keep next to the eyeliner. And throughout, Brown urges her readers to feel good about themselves: what makeup can't fix, she says, self-confidence can. (Oct.) Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.

Dress and Morality or Skin Aging

Dress and Morality

Author: Aileen Ribeiro

Moralists have raged throughout history against various fashions for being too short, too long, too tight, too loose or too costly. Highlighting the times when choice of dress was a moral minefield, this enlightening and entertaining book looks at fashion extremes over the centuries, from the sexual display of the codpiece through to corsets, crinolines and décolletage. Providing a sharp and humorous look at the outright risqué as well as the grotesquely exaggerated and even the repulsive, Ribeiro shows how dress has functioned variously as a vehicle of righteousness or turpitude and as an expression of sexuality, class or social status. In 747 St Boniface deemed wide stripes and scarlet borders to incite lust and ruination of the soul. Well over a millennium later immodest dress ranked high in Jesuit Father Bernard Vaughan’s book on the sins of society. Medical practitioners once labelled the v-necked top, now a standard style, ‘the pneumonia neckline’. Was it the force of society or sheer vanity of fashion that drove women to wear sleeves the size of balloons? Are sexual boundaries between dress worn by men and women diminishing?
